Ryan is an attorney focused on the construction industry and litigation. He aligns closely to construction executives through all aspects of their business and all phases of the projects they manage from contract negotiations to the prosecution and defense of claims in dispute resolution.

Ryan also provides counsel and advocacy to clients regarding labor and employment disputes, collective bargaining, employment policies, and unfunded liability issues from multi-employer pension plans.

Clients seek Ryan's counsel as he is familiar with the detail and process necessary to coordinate delivery of the best possible solutions. He is confident and comfortable in both the board room and courtroom as a negotiator and tactician.

Most recently, he served as General Counsel, Vice President, and Secretary of The Weitz Company, LLC (Weitz), a national and international general contractor, design-builder, and construction manager. While at Weitz, he was responsible for managing the legal department and risk management. He also led outside counsel and advised company leaders on a variety of strategic topics including contracts, finance, public-private partnership arrangements, employment policies and programs, labor negotiations, complex transactions, risk avoidance, insurance, and dispute resolution.

Ryan previously served as General Counsel for the Iowa Department of Administrative Services. In that position, he was the lead lawyer for the government on construction contracting, claims, and labor relations and worked on wide variety of legal matters for the state related to real estate/construction, information technology, human resources/labor, and accounting.

Ryan started his legal career as a lawyer in the Whitfield & Eddy construction law practice group. Prior to joining the firm, he practiced as a civil engineer for several years as a licensed Professional Engineer. He brings a deep understanding of all facets of construction to the table including planning, engineering, estimation, budgeting, contracting, subcontracting, procurement, building, risk management, and more.

He is a Judge Advocate General (JAG) in the Iowa Army National Guard, assigned to the 734th RSG.
