Tyler Coe Interviewed on Local To Legend Podcast About Personal Branding and Family Law
Divorce and family law attorney Tyler Coe was a guest on the May 3, 2021 episode of the Local to Legend podcast with host Emily Steele. The episode covered the role of personal branding in law firm marketing and how education plays a role in Tyler’s family law practice. PERSONAL BRANDING MAKES LAWYERS MEMORABLE
Tyler is a divorce lawyer at Whitfield & Eddy Law who is using his personal brand to grow a robust client list and impact his community. From experience, physical products make it easy to differentiate brands. However, professional services, like real estate agents, chiropractors, and lawyers need to be differentiated by personality. Memorable moments in person and online make you become top of mind and tip-of-tongue.
WHAT IS PERSONAL BRANDING AND HOW CAN IT HELP
Tyler says there is nothing like having people that he doesn’t know come to him for advice and help in a divorce and his personal brand is an influence that attracts clients. He was helped to develop his own brand through Brand Launch, a company owned by Emily and Whitney Warne. Brand Launch is an intensive class to help professionals build their personal brand and authentic voice. Personal brand training showed Tyler that he has a lot of work to do as a business owner to be in control of his own destiny, including how he is presented and seen in the marketplace.
HOW TO BUILD AN AUDIENCE AND FANS WITH YOUR BRAND
Being authentic is letting people know who you really are and what to expect in interactions. Tyler would show up on social media in various ways including what is happening in his day or even what is interesting or relevant in divorce and family law. His usual content includes articles on child custody, gifted and inherited property, pet custody, and spousal support would be shared also in an insightful and humorous way. Humor that Tyler would use with friends and family became a part of his authentic voice over time on social interactions on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.
Lyla, Tyler’s 7-year old rescue beagle is a very important part of his life, and she is a regular part of his posts and conversations. He is also an advocate for rescue cats and rescue dogs including the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. Mental health is important to Tyler as president of Please Pass The Love, a state-wide non-profit organization dedicated to student and educator health.
EDUCATING READERS ABOUT FAMILY LAW
Tyler’s family law practice and his client and referral relationships are positively impacted by his willingness and ability to educate people including lawyers, clients and the general public about the law. While he’s careful not to offer legal advice, he shares what should be considered general public knowledge. Tyler says that the lawyers who want to work on the most complex and interesting legal matters will be out there in the community and online talking and writing about those issues. Currently, health, wellness and legal ethics are something he is passionate about and makes presentations, writes and posts about those topics on a regular basis to a new audience.

Authenticity is important and showing up where you care is doubly important. Tyler’s social media presence attracts clients, but his approach and personality are what makes the relationships work to help people in their divorce and demonstrating that he cares. Personal branding changed the way that he’s growing his business in a way that works for him and attracts interesting and enjoyable clients.

This year Tyler sent out Valentines to people through the mail because he wanted to reconnect with to say ‘hi’ and that he is thinking of them. The authenticity is a personal connection that shows he cares and want to maintain a relationship.

Often, his audience grows by accident, but because people notice his posts. He cheers people on in their life. When they celebrate, he celebrates with them whether via a Facebook post, Instagram direct message or LinkedIn. Notably, people notice his posts and news about the law.

Tyler recommends keeping track of every interaction because it helps to not have to remember everything. He has an ever-growing list of contacts to keep track of clients, referral sources, friends and others who connect him with clients.
